How to replace a broken proximity sensor on a CO2 laser

I replace a broken proximity sensor on my Monport 80W CO2 laser, a roughly $10 fix that took me about 25 to 30 minutes.

The proximity sensor on my Monport 80W CO2 laser broke, and replacing it took me about 25 to 30 minutes with a part that cost around $10. Until the new sensor showed up, I disabled homing on the Y axis so I could keep using the laser.

I show how I figured out which replacement sensor to get and how I wired it in, including tracing the wires through the channels inside the laser cabinet. Then I pull the old switch, install the new one and match up the wire colors so everything works the way it should.

I used a PL-05N limit switch as the replacement. I bought it on Amazon, and it turned out to be a Fotek. Putting everything back together and testing it was easy, and homing worked again.

If you’re comfortable doing a little DIY, this is a pretty straightforward repair, and you shouldn’t need to pay someone to fix it for you.
