If you make the same thing over and over, like coasters, a jig makes life a lot 
easier. I walk through making one that works for CO2 or diode lasers.

I design the jig in LightBurn using absolute coordinates, cut it from Baltic Birch
plywood and line it up on the laser bed. I use magnets to hold the material while
I align it, and I make sure the laser is zeroed before starting anything.

Getting the alignment right is the important part, so I spend some time on absolute
coordinates. Don’t worry about making it pretty or perfectly symmetrical, either.
It just needs to work.

Once you have one, you can make identical pieces with a lot less fuss, and the same
idea works for plenty of projects besides coasters.
